Business Mentorship
For small businesses and start-ups
Get a highly experienced consultant in exchange for a small charity contribution
The proposition
Hi, my name is Ian Lunn.
I’ve spent my career building a successful business, working in technology and marketing, and delivering training and consultancy across a range of industries.
Now I want to use my skills and experience to help others – to give something back.
Small businesses, start-ups and non-profit organisations often have the biggest need for help but the least money to bring in much-needed external expertise. So, my offer is free business mentorship in return for a small contribution to charity and the payment of my expenses.
Why I can help you
I am the co-founder and a Director of Product Focus. We’ve built up the business over 17 years and are now Europe's leading product management training and consultancy business.
What I’ve learned is that the principles and skills of product management can help improve every organisation, no matter what their sector or size.
As an expert in product management, I’ve helped hundreds of companies and thousands of people to improve what they do. And, as an entrepreneur who has grown their own business, I feel I am uniquely qualified to help an organisation succeed.
What is product management?
Product management is the job of looking after a specific product or service within a business.
It’s a role at the very heart of an organisation that balances the need to bring value (usually profit) with what customers want and what you’re able to deliver.
That is exactly the same challenge that every small business or start-up faces.
One of the principles of product management is to create an offer once and sell it many times. That is the most efficient approach. It’s what happens with physical products like tins of baked beans and software products like Microsoft. Even people-based businesses (offering services) follow this model and try to do things in repeatable, reusable ways.
Another key responsibility of product management is working out what the right product or service is for the business, making sure the business can build and deliver it, and then making sure the business can sell it.
Again, this is the same challenge that every small business or start-up faces.
Whatever you do - the principles, skills and tools of product management can really help you run your business. From more effective marketing to increased sales and streamlined processes.
… all helping you make or save more money!

FAQs
How will it work?
We will have a free initial meeting to see if we get on and you think I can help. This allows us to chat about your business, the challenges you have and things I think will help.
If we go ahead, typically I will work on a presentation of ideas I believe will help you. We will then meet again and I’ll talk you through them face-to-face. Your commitment for this is a one-off £300 payment to charity, any travel expenses (and a coffee).
If you decide you would like me to do anything else, we will agree a plan with further small charity contributions.
Why are you doing this for free?
I don’t need to work to support myself financially… but I’m not ready to retire.
I do want to contribute to good causes, and I hope I can maximise this contribution by using the skills and experience I’ve built up over the last 40 years.
Yes, I could offer product management consultancy for big money to big companies, but I prefer working on my own terms with smaller organisations.
Are you on LinkedIn?
Of course – you can see me here.
…. and a little more about me
I love wine and cooking. And I’m lucky enough to own a house in the South of France that allows me to indulge them both. Tennis and yoga keep me fit. Supporting Newcastle United keeps me grounded.
